Heart care, priced before you fly

Heart specialists review your case first and suggest a procedure. That could be a stent, bypass surgery or a new valve, planned in advance.

Bypass and valve surgery mean a long stay. Plan on 3 to 5 weeks in Guangzhou. That covers the first weeks of recovery, and your surgeon may want longer.

Why China

What China has going for it

Figures come from official or published sources. Prices are estimates, from October 2026.

  • Valve surgery for less

From the UK, valve replacement comes to an est. total of £23,000, with return flights and 4 weeks in a hotel. A typical private price in the UK is about £34,000.

  • Done in large numbers

About 1.9 million coronary stent or balloon procedures were carried out in China in 2024.

  • A busy surgical province

Guangzhou's home province, Guangdong, reported 12.4 million inpatient operations in 2024. That's the most of any province.

  • Stent prices fell

National bulk buying cut the price of a heart stent by more than 90%. The stent is only part of the bill.

What to expect

How it works

Your own plan may differ.

  1. Tell us what you need

Your diagnosis, what recent tests showed and the treatment your cardiologist suggests.

  2. A specialist estimates the price

We pass it to the hospital. A heart specialist gives an estimated price and stay. They may want more tests in Guangzhou first.

  3. We book your appointment

We book it for you and let the hospital know you're coming.

  4. At the hospital

Give your appointment details at the international department. Tests come first, then the procedure. Your surgeon decides when you're fit to fly.

Good to know

Before you decide

Some of these may change your mind.

  • We book planned care, not emergencies. If you have chest pain now, call your local emergency number.

  • You can't fly straight after heart treatment. UK aviation guidance says about 3 days after a stent, if a doctor clears you. After bypass surgery, it's about 10 to 14 days. Your surgeon decides.

  • Long flights soon after surgery raise the risk of blood clots. A 2026 UK hospital guideline goes further. After major surgery, it advises 4 to 8 weeks before flights over 4 hours.

  • Tell your airline and travel insurer about your surgery before you fly home. Some airlines ask for a fit-to-fly letter.

  • A long stay adds a lot to the cost. From the UK or Australia, the total is often close to private care at home. US patients usually save the most on bypass and valve surgery.

  • You'll need a visa. Visa-free entry doesn't cover medical care. Check the rules with your local Chinese visa centre.

  • Normal travel insurance usually won't cover planned treatment abroad. Check with your insurer before you book. You may need specialist cover.

This isn't medical advice

Read our terms

This page gives general information about a treatment. It isn't a recommendation for you.

We book appointments at independent hospitals. We're not a hospital, so we don't diagnose or treat anyone.

Only a doctor who has examined you can say if a treatment suits you. You and the doctor treating you decide together.

Every treatment carries risks. Results vary from person to person.

Prices, lengths of stay and recovery times on this page are estimates. Long flights soon after surgery raise the risk of blood clots. Your doctor in Guangzhou decides when it's safe to fly home.

Talk to your own doctor before you decide to travel for treatment. In an emergency, call your local emergency number.
