Why China

Strong hospitals, lower prices

Public hospitals handle more than 8 in 10 hospital visits in China.

  • Hospitals graded by the state

China has three levels of hospital, and Level 3 is the highest. Grade 3A means Level 3 with the top grade, A. The state reviews these hospitals against national standards, updated in 2025.

    1,975

Grade 3A hospitals in China, end of 2025

  • Focused on complex cases

National standards from 2025 steer Level 3 hospitals towards emergencies and serious illness.

    164 million

Admissions to Level 3 hospitals in 2025

  • More scanners and surgical robots

China's 2021–2025 plan made room for 559 more surgical robots. Proton therapy has been available in Guangzhou since December 2024.

    860

More PET-CT scanners allowed in the same plan

  • Prices cut by bulk buying

National bulk buying cut the price of artificial hips and knees. A separate campaign more than halved the typical cost of a dental implant. These are standard public prices, and international departments set their own.

  • Nasopharyngeal cancer

A cancer of the upper throat, behind the nose. It's far more common in southern China than elsewhere in the country. Researchers in Guangzhou led a 480-patient trial on treating it, published in 2019.

Patient guide

What to bring

Our patient guide covers paperwork, money, phones and hospital visits in China. These five things come first.

Before you fly

0 of 5 ready

  • You'll need a visa for treatment. Your passport needs at least 6 months left and 2 blank pages.

  • Ask for them in DICOM format, the file type hospitals use. Get two copies, plus the written reports.

  • Bring your latest doctor's letter, test results and pathology reports.

  • Type it up with generic names and doses. Add a letter from your doctor.

  • Some brands aren't sold in China. Bring enough for your stay plus a few spare days, in the original boxes.

Don't pack pathology slides or tissue blocks. They may need customs approval to enter China. Bring the reports instead.
